This book is only available in German.

In this anthology, 19 authors examine the life and work, the historical significance and the social reception of Attorney General Dr. Fritz Bauer.

In the first part, “Fritz Bauer – Life and Work,” Irmtrud Wojak, Herta Däubler-Gmelin, Wolfgang Kaleck, Kurt Nelhiebel and Ralf Oberndörfer examine Bauer’s humanist-centered ideas regarding society, politics and justice.

In part two of the anthology “Historical Appraisal - Bauer's Great Trials”, the authors Erardo C. Rautenberg, Norbert Wolf, Udo Dittmann, Thomas Walther and Rebecca Wittmann focus on the importance of Attorney General Fritz Bauer in dealing with Nazi injustice and also discuss Bauer's important trials such as the “Remer Trial”, the “Auschwitz Trial” and Bauer's efforts to address Nazi “euthanasia”.

In the third part, "The public image of Fritz Bauer - reception and controversies", a large number of authors, in addition to those mentioned, deal with historical research, educational work and the memory of Fritz Bauer. In doing so, they move past the contemporary criticism of Bauer and draw a connection to the reception of Bauer in exhibitions, films and books of the recent past. The authors show in a unique way the social perception of the processing of Nazi crimes then and now, in which Bauer can be both a shining example of democracy and human rights and an antihero.
