"How does democracy actually work, Mr. Bauer?"
This question, posed by our "Democracy Workshop" for students, was answered by the lawyer Fritz Bauer through his own life. Even as a child, Bauer experienced antisemitic hostility at school. He felt the injustices associated with it firsthand. As a student, he wanted to become a policeman with a saber. His mother, however, did not encourage his childlike doubt about the injustices of the world. Instead, she instilled in him the "Golden Rule," known in almost all religions: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
Fritz Bauer later said that this sentence had made a deep impression on him. It had, in effect, decided his political future.
