Am Ende wartet das Vergessen

This book is only available in German.

"Am Ende wartet das Vergessen" is a moving homage to one of Latin America's most important doctors and to the author's father, Héctor Abad Gómez. The doctor, who wanted to defeat the epidemics in his home country of Colombia, was targeted by the Colombian paramilitaries and was murdered in the street in 1987.

Twenty years later, the son paints an unforgettable picture of a man who follows his conscience in one of the darkest periods of Latin America's recent history. Beyond the political story, Héctor Abad Faciolince tells of his own upbringing in a bourgeois world that was only apparently safe, surrounded by seemingly archaic religious customs. His book is one of the best-written accounts of the deep love between a father and his son that modern literature has to offer. The book has sold over 250,000 copies in Spanish and was published in the USA by Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

The translation was carefully revised by Sabine Giersberg and, at the author's request, expanded to include previously shortened passages.
