Amineh – “No bigger than a Kalashnikov”

When Amineh Kakabaveh arrived in Sweden as a refugee at the age of eighteen, she was practically illiterate, but quickly learned Swedish. She worked while attending school and eventually earned a university degree. After becoming involved in local politics, she became a member of the Swedish parliament for the Left Party in 2008. The same party later tried to expel her from parliament for allegedly fighting too hard against honour culture – crimes committed against women of traditional backgrounds in defence of “family honour”.

She stayed true to her principles and remained in parliament as an independent socialist MP, which put her in the position of being the decisive vote to end the government crisis in 2021. In order to win her support, the Minister of Justice was forced to negotiate with her on eight specific demands she had made - including ending state aid for independent religious schools, reducing the tax burden for senior citizens living on pensions, and extending protection for women and children at risk of so-called honour crimes.
